Tenant Organizing
The East New York Urban Youth Corps' tenant organizers work with residents of New York City-owned buildings and those owned and managed by ENYUYC. They developed effective tenant association structures to advocate for tenant concerns, developed in-building programs and projects, advanced tenant leaders, and increased community activism.
ENYUYC has created a tenant council, consisting of representatives from all its buildings, which gives guidance and direction to all ENYUYC departments.
ENYUYC's tenant organizers have been instrumental in providing the leadership needed for Williams Avenue tenants to become part of the NYC Neighborhood Redevelopment Program, allowing over 200 families to have their apartments completely renovated.
Open Space Organizing ENYUYC's open space organizing has been a key factor in creating the Ujima Garden, which sponsors horticultural and cultural arts programming, and the Success Garden, which was created in conjunction with the NYC Parks Department and volunteers from AmeriCorps.
